This post is based on one that was originally published in May 15, 2011, on my blog “Pollinators Info” (no longer online).
No animals required!
Water pollination is the most ancient (evolved earliest) type, found among aquatic plants and those that live in moist environments. The sperm and eggs of plants like the mosses in the featured image come together during moist periods. Sperm and eggs are both released into the water and pollination happens when they randomly bump into each other.
One advantage of this type of pollination is that it allows sexual reproduction without the involvement of an animal transporter (a pollinator) to move sperm from one plant to another. The biggest drawback of this type of pollination is that the plants cannot reproduce in dry conditions.
